Ascan of any wine shop is proof of a revolution in the wine industry. Hundreds of wines are topped with metal screw caps, and the number of wineries wedded to this new way of sealing is growing. The traditional cork is under siege, and with good reason.
Cork's vulnerability to taints and its questionable sealing qualities cause serious concern to most winemakers interested in presenting their wines in the best condition. Even traditionalists lament the shortcomings of cork.
The problem is even worse with older wines. From those who keep a few bottles for a year or two, to those who enjoy the luxury of a large collection of aged wines, the disappointment corks can bring is ever-present.
